Double Glazing on Hardwood Windows?
Until recently, slim Georgian bars could not be combined with double glazing in timber sash windows. The spacer bars that lie around the edge and between the two panes of glass, in double glazed units, needed half an inch of timber to hide them on each side of the bar, plus half an inch of timber to act as a timber spine in the centre of the glazing bar. This means a timber Georgian bar would have to be at least 1½” wide (38mm) to support a double-glazed unit.
One solution is to plant a bar on the outside of the double glazed unit – both sides, with a space bar inside the units, making it look like the bar is going through the glass.
“Slimlite” double glazing
There is a newly developed system of very slim double glazing called “Slimlite”, which has a very narrow spacer bar around the edge – 7mm. This allows us to putty in the unit into a traditional thin glazing bar.
